Blue Chickens In A Red Barn

A Bunch of Blue Chickens Running Around

If I told you there were blue chickens running around and nesting in a red barn, would you believe me?  Of course you would.  Everyone knows that blue chickens are the best tasting chickens alive.

Red chickens are tough old birds, and even after cleaning, still have pin feathers that can't be taken out since the skin on these old birds is so tough.  These old Red Chickens like to flock together and make fun of the Blue Chickens.  Red Chickens think the only way to be is the red way.

One time I saw a Red Chicken start pecking a Blue Chicken on the head.  That Blue Chicken wasn't a coward so he pecked back.  If you can imagine a couple of chickens going at it and all the time flying around the hen yard, you'll understand what a sight it was.  First the Red Chicken would peck the Blue Chick on the head and then the Blue Chicken would put its beek at the base of the tail feathers and pull with all his might.  Out came a full beakful of tail feathers.  That got that old Red Chicken dancing.  Before long the Blue Chicken didn't have much top notch left but, the old Red Chicken had absolutely no tail feathers left and even part of his wings were cropped and frail looking.  He was a sight to see.  But did the old Red Chicken learn from this.....NO he didn't.  It wasn't long and he was at it again.  He believed his breed of red chicken was the best and he was going to prove it.  I call this stubborness.

Sometimes the way of the Red Chickens isn't always the best.  But usually the Reds are so stubborn they aren't willing to change.  Their barn has been red for so long they believe red is the only color in the rainbow.

Sometimes a change to a Red Chicken's diet and overall habits might benefit the connoisseur of fine Chicken dining.  The Blue might know more about what to eat and do to make his self more palatable.  Red Chickens, with their stubborness, typically won't change their habits so they remain tough.

The moral of this story is.  If the Red Chickens don't change, the barn is going to get repainted and at that point the barn color is going to change to Blue.  And, you won't see many Red Chickens running around  the farm yard.  Instead there will be a bunch of young, tender and willing to learn, Blue Chickens running around.

Just a fair warning to the Red Chickens in the Red Barn.  I think your barn might be painted before long.  As long as it isn't green, you should be ok.  Those Green Chickens are aliens and don't belong.

Greenview At Its Best

Just some things I remember about my young days in Greenview.

 1.  Remember when the high school gymnasium had to be strengthened and there were big steel square plates up and down the face of the school.  The ivy on the front of the school was cut out to put in these steel plates and that made the school look dumb.  Then later on the new addition covered them up.  But the tennis court went by the wayside.

 2.  Remember the old milk machines in the school.  It cost a penny or two.  Put your money in and then slide them milk to the side to get it out.

 3.  Remember when Greenview had real homecomings with carnival rides and fun things to do instead of the boring "no carnival" attitude the CIA takes now days.

 4.  Remember the dances which were held in the old grade school gymnasium.

 5.  Remember biddy basketball for the little kids.  The older boys would coach the boys playing basketball and the older girls would coach the little girls on how to be a great cheerleader.

 6.  Remember the ice cream soda's at Emma's Corner Cafe.

 7.  Remember when the bus would let kids off at the Corner Cafe upon returning from an away game.

 8.  Remember when Locky was driving the school bus with the cheerleaders and the glee club and the axle broke on the bus.  Lucky Locky kept the bus from turning over.  It was a wild ride and we all were scared to death, but liked it when the team bus pulled up behind us and we all got to ride the same bus.  Those ongoing relationships between players and cheerleaders got a chance to blossom during that dark bus ride home.

 9.  Remember Gerald McKee sitting on the park bench blowing spit bubbles.

10. Remember when the post office was in the old First State Bank Building.

11.  Remember when the K & K Grocery Market and Schmittys Tavern burned in 1963.

12.  Remember when Tripps Lumberyard was on the south side of the square.

13.  Remember when you had to crank your old phone to get the operator.

14.  Remember when a bunch of kids would play baseball at the old grade school baseball diamond.

15.  Remember the particular smell of the grocery stores upon entering.

16.  Remember back when no one had air conditioning in their houses.

Quote For The Day
Part of the success in life is to eat what
you like and let the food fight it out inside.
--Mark Twain

If I tell you a story today, do you remember it tomorrow?  If you're like me, after I eat lunch, I have a hard time remembering if I had lunch let alone what I ate for lunch.  I suffer from CRS.....and you know what that is  "Can't Remember Sh*t".

But time passes on.  And, besides, who cares what I had for lunch.  If I can't remember, then no one else will give a darn.

One way to cure CRS is memory training.  Which means paying someone else to help a person  remember.

Another way is not give a darn.  Who cares.  All oldies have a tendency to forget so I won't be alone.  Not really a cure...just an alternative.

And lastly (is that a word?), is to slather on Vicks Vapor Rub, all over your chest, and around your nose, put a hot rag on your chest and smell the vapors.  Hope to heck it gets rid of your cold.  Crap...I forgot we were talking about cures for remembering.  That cure was for a stuffed up nose.

History - Current - Future

Time Marches On

First came our history.  Then time brought the current.  And before long it will be the future.  Where do I stand in this timeline?

Well....since I'm here today and it's current time, I suppose I will be here tomorrow, so that's future.  My accurate predictions for the future would be so far off, I won't even attempt to say that I can make accurate predictions....a psychic I'm not......maybe a gypsy at times, but being psychic just doesn't fit into my repertoire of skills.

But just for my readers, I will get out my crystal ball and tell the future.  First of all I will make my predictions about the welfare of old people.   This is called a current and a future prediction.   As I see it, old people are young people who have aged for many moons.  These old people know a lot but as they get older, they forget more than they ever knew.  When asked about things, they revert back to their childhood and act like they know nothing.  Now this could be selective but in the majority of cases, I think old people are just big babies and they actually don't know.  Oh boy, I can't wait for this young chick to get old.  (cough cough)  I predict that all old people will eventually not be on this earth.  You know the old saying...dust to dust.  Well that's what I predict...they will be gone like the wind.  As long they don't wind up as dust bunnies under my bed when someone scatters their ashes, I will be fine with that analysis of old people being dust.

Now I will make a prediction about this upcoming election. This is called a future prediction. I predict that someone will win.  Whether or not the winner will be the choice of everyone concerned, it's doubtful, but someone will win.  I just hope the election hurries and finishes as I am sick of seeing posts and tv ads about who is better than the other....politicians are all a bunch of hooey .... don't shoot the messenger, it says that in my crystal ball.

The next prediction is a current and history prediction.  I know for a fact that history was here and then gone.  No one wrote anything down so my prediction is that I'm never going to be able to write down what happened in history.  I can barely write down what is happening in current let alone in history.  Plus, I predict that if I continue to try to document a lot of history I will one of those "big baby old persons", not even knowing who the heck I am because this history prediction stuff will make you go bonkers.

Now for the real future predictions.  Today is yesterday's tomorrow and tomorrow is today's tomorrow.  So if that's the case, then I can't wait until next week as that will be next week's bunch of yesterdays.  I won't even know what time it is by then....my mind will be boggled so much.  Being a psychic makes me need a new crystal ball. Mine has big cracks in it right now.

History is a cyclic poem written by Time

--Percy Bysshe Shelley

Here's my poem for Greenview.

Greenview Greenview you're getting old

Buildings decrepit and full of mold.

Never leave us that's for sure

Be here in our memories, oh yes sir.

But when we all leave you, remember us,

And, by all means, make no fuss.

So now it's time to say good-bye

So tell us the truth and give us no lies.

We want to know the history of the town,

You tell us now and don't let us down.

Lest Time Gets Away...Do It!

Where Does The Time Go?

Time just gets away from me.  One day it's Monday and when I look up it's Friday.  My Time List Needs To Be Done!  Procrastination will get you every time.  It's a biter in the hind end if you don't have a list according to this covert procrastinator.  So do it....right now.  Make a list.  Here's my current list for the next 704 days (two years) of things I want to do:

Quote For The Day
He who trims himself to suit everyone
will soon whittle himself away.

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.

Trouble no one about their religion,
respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours.

Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.

Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the the service of your people.

Prepare a noble death song for the day you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place.

Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

Jabberhocky!

Time For A Large Amount of Nonsense

I decided this morning that this definitely is a nonsense day.  As someone once said (me know not who) ....  "To appreciate nonsense requires a serious interest in life."

When I think of the word nonsense, I always think of the Lewis Carroll nonsense poem called "Jabberwocky".  I love that word.  It makes so much sense rather than nonsense.  It makes me think of a person who jabbers and who is full of hocky (poop doncha know).

When I got to thinking about hocky (poop) I realized that there are a lot of words for hocky.  I would think I need to refer to the hocky thesaurus. So I tried.  When I went to look up a bunch of the words, I found the poop thesaurus.  Do you believe that??!!

When you think about that word, it can be a verb or a noun.  But there sure are a lot more noun synonyms than verbs.  I know poop is a difficult subject to talk about, but we all do it....so what the heck is wrong with admitting that we are all full of brown bombs.  Or ,another color if we ate something weird.  I supposed the most scientific term I can think of is to call it fecal matter.  But everyone knows I'm not a fecal matter speaking person.....I would rather call it a more low class trailer park term.  Like crap or hocky or do do .... those are a few of my more tongue rolling picks.

See I told you it was a nonsense day.  Nonsense will get you nowhere and will also get you everywhere.  If you have too much nonsense surrounding your very actions, you might not be asked to come around again.  But if the other person in the transaction is also a "jabberhocky" type person, then your nonsense will get you whatever you want.  Just ask me.  I've been a jabberer since I was born and my dad always said I was full of it....so I guess I'm a jabberhocky type person.

So climb out of your boring day, and be a jabberhocky with me.  I know you have a serious interest in life.....especially about living until tomorrow.

March 20, 1971 - Ronnie Doggett lost his life in a one car accident on the Middletown blacktop east of town.

April 13, 1971 - Harry Jones, owner of the Owl Garage for 42 years, died on this day.

December 20, 1971 - Tommy Parks III, drowned in the Sangamon River, near the Gudgel Bridge.  His car was swept from a flooded road west of the bridge and it is believed that he accidentally ran into the flooded area and lost his footing when he attempted to leave the car.

Hickory Dickory Dock....the mouse ran up the clock.  What a stupid thing to do!  Could the mouse tell time and that was the reason he ran up the clock??  Or, was someone leaving cheese up the clock trying to catch the mouse?

It's always bothered me why that mouse ran up the clock.  It would seem he had no earthly reason to run up that clock.  So when that old clock struck one, it must have scared the mouse almost to death so he ran down.  Serves him right....he shouldn't have run up the clock in the first place.

9-11 Eleven Years Later

We still remember
We will never forget

I remember a horrible feeling of loss.

I remember feeling patriotic.

I remember feeling enormous sadness.

I felt angry.

I wanted revenge for my fellow Americans who perished.

I felt it wasn't over...there would be more attacks.

I felt an immense sense of pride in being a American who cared about those affected.

I felt hatred for those who did it.

But I will never forget the day.

And hope that it never happens again.

Let us not forget those who died to save others.

J'eat Yet?

J'eat Yet?  J'eat Yet?  J'eat Yet?

When in the south talk like 'em.  I'm learning how to do that.  First time I heard "j'eat yet", I definitely didn't know what was being said.  Non-southerner here, believe me.

Then I began to catch on.  It meant "Did you eat yet".  Of course that was what was being said.  Only it was in what I call "mouth shorthand".

I knew what "y'all" meant but, when I heard "chugged full", I was baffled.  What the heck does that mean?  I had to ask the person who was talking as soon as she got done flapping her gums.  I casually said, "what the heck does "chugged full"" mean?  She told me it means full and overflowing.  Well of course it does.....when she first said it, she was filling my water glass and said "if I don't watch it, it will be "chugged full".

One day, in 98 degree weather, and while I was in the lobby of a building, a nice lady was "goin on" about this and that.  The door kept opening and closing and "leaving in" (as she said) hot air.  All at once she said I wish they would "close the newmonina hole".  What???????????  I was so shocked I know my eyes must have been about as big as silver dollars.  So she said...honey haven't you ever heard that?  NOOOOOOOOOO  I haven't.  She said it means I wish they would close the door.  OMG ....  I figured it had something to do with shutting the door, but I sure as heck wasn't going to get "Newmonia" in 98 degree weather.  But she was right.....I wish they would close the door as it was making me hot....but I didn't get "Newmonia" thank goodness.

Through the days, I also heard "well hush my mouth"; "sorry as a two dollar watch" (hey watch that .... I bought the cutest watch for not too much more than two dollars); "on me like white on rice";  awfullest"; "didja"; "crookeder"; "matoes"; "taters"; "tal" (which I think was towel); and "hankering".  One time I asked about ordering some flowers and the clerk kept saying something about the "floors"....I gave up, as I sure didn't want a bunch of floors being sent instead of the flowers I meant to send.

Then came the very best mouth shorthand I heard on my road to discovery of southern "twang lang" (which is the term I've coined to mean the voice of the south).  I was sitting by a nice lady who said she wasn't feeling well.  I offered to call someone but she said no she would be ok.  All at once she said the heat was making her feel badly and she was a dizzy as a bessy bug.  To me that meant she must be pretty dizzy because if she's likening it to a bug, it had to be bad.  From previous experience with bugs in the south, I knew  I had heard references to a beetle that was called the Betsy Bug.   So, I knew that woman was really feeling dizzy because those Betsy Bugs are huge and ugly with a thingy on the front that looks like a horn.

More than once, the following was said to me "you must be from the north".  Yes I am from the north came the response from me....  but I went on to clarify that I sure wished I was from the south.  So from now on I will have to claim ...... "American by birth - southern by the grace of God".  And, I will leave it at that.  Have to leave now and find some vittles as I really have a hankering for a big piece of old southern pecan (spoken with a long "e") pie and tater salad with a big slab of fried catfish with a toppin of remoulade sauce.  Yummee.

I bet when I left the south, my new southern friends probably were talking about my northern accent and I was probably called a Redneck more than once.  And, because I kept asking questions like "Huh?",  I was probably labeled as one who doesn't have a lick of good sense or at least that I was so dumb that my brother-in-law was probably also my uncle.   And, they probably think that all of the Lite/Lower Fat Spam I've eaten over the years has caused cholesterol buildup in my brain veins and has caused me to be unable to understand "God's" language for the south.

Ya gotta love that twang lang y'all.  I'm gonna learnt that twang lang as soon as I can.

Death
Wayne Hohimer passed away on August 30.  He was born April 29, 1923.  He is survived by his wife Eloise, and daughters Karen Setzer and Shelly Cassen of Greenview; daughter-in-law Sheila Hohimer of Springfield; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Milas of Lockport.

Once upon a time I thought about writing a book of poetry.  The thought went around and around in my mind and then I threw that silly idea out the window and decided that I wasn't ready to write a book of poems which most people wouldn't understand.  My problem is that people are always trying to determine what an author means with every word written.

I remember back to my high school years when we were given a poem and then told to write about what it meant.  My mind always went blank.  How would I know what the author meant when he himself might not have known what he meant.  An author sometimes just writes what comes to mind with no thought to what he/she actually means.

It seems that every teacher I always had knew exactly what the author meant.  This was before I became wise and found out that the interpretation was the teacher's own interpretation of what it meant.....and when I wrote what I thought it meant, it never jived with the teacher.  Then I had a college instructor who put our class wise on interpretations and how authors sometimes never think about what the passage means...they just write.  And he also told us that just because a teacher has an interpretation of what it means doesn't mean that's what it meant.  Dang it....I always wrote down my interpretation for my high school teacher and I probably could have passed those classes after all.

So now I write for fun and who the heck cares what it means.  Sometimes I write random thoughts and most of the time these make sense .... but sometimes they don't make a lick of sense and are dumb besides.   Guess that's why I haven't yet decided to write my book of poetry or even finish my unfinished novel which was started long ago and is still waiting for my next thoughts.  Perhaps one day I will get the urge to write poetry and finish the novel.  But maybe I won't.  For now, I'll just continue to bore my readers on this blog with my whimsical words of wisdom....I think that's what they are.

Happy Labor Day Weekend

Happy Labor Day Weekend

The old town will smile this weekend.
It will have many of its offspring
back for the Labor Day Celebration.

A town is only as good as its people,
and Greenview has raised many good people
and also gained many other good people
as citizens.  Sure, we lost a few, but we
were made better by their presence, even if only for a while.

The Marbold Mansion Celebration is
set for Sunday, 11 to 4 and if it pours
I was told that many of the tradesman
will most likely be at the school.
Ice Cream and cake will help celebrate that
 the Marbold Mansion will indeed
still be a part of Greenview's
 future hometown history.

If you are traveling, be safe.  Be happy and by all means have fun this weekend.
