Eeny Meeny Miny Moe.....

Eeny Meeny Miny Moe.  Catch a tiger by the toe.  If he hollers, let him go.  Eeny Meeny Miny Moe.  My mother told me to pick the very best one, and you are it!

Do you remember saying this when you were a kid?  Especially when you wanted to play tag or choose teams for a school team playing games.

Then, of course, if you didn't pick your best friend because the eeny meeny miny moe choice landed on someone else, you were in trouble with your best friend.  But best friends usually would make up in a short period of time.  Some didn't.

You probably remember this type of friend battle when you were young:

My friend Annie got a new dress and came to school and
bragged about it and made fun my old dress.  She told me
my dress was old and it looked like it was a hand-me-down.
She also told me she didn't want to run around with me
because my clothes were old and ugly.  At lunch she sat with
the girls she always said were snotty.

or, maybe this scenario:

My best friend Scotty got a car for his 16th birthday.  He
didn't ask me to ride in the car and instead asked some boys
he plays basketball with.  He said he didn't have room for me.
I even gave him a birthday present but he didn't seem to like it.

Neither of these are good situations, but these type of things happen in the world of kid friendships.  I always said the Eeny Meeny Miny Moe thing because I was calling my ex-friend an Eeny Meany and I also considered my ex-friend a Miny Moe too, whatever that is.

By the way what the heck is a Miny Moe?  hmm....I bet there is no definition.    I'm assuming an Eeny Meeny  is  close to meaning a tiny Meeny but who knows.  I sure don't.  All those years of using this saying and I don't even know what the heck it means.  But I sure used it a lot when a kid in picking tag teams or other school game teams as well as using it to call my nasty friends a name.

So if I meet you on the street and we were kiddies together, if I call you an Eeny Meeny, you might think back to the time you were mean to me.  You probably deserved it at the time.

Death of a Resident
Greenview lost a favorite son on October 4.  Dennis (Denny) Setzer lost his battle.  For those of us who knew Denny, he was always laughing and was a friend to all.  He is survived by his father Al, his brother Rick and his children and grandchildren.  He will be long remembered.   Greenview is proud to have known Denny as one of its resident children.   Our deepest sympathies to the family.

Quote For The Day

If you want to understand today, you
have to search yesterday.
--Pearl Buck

If you were a crayola crayon, you would have to learn to like the crayon who resided next to you.  The color of your own crayon you personally lived in, would have to not clash with the color of your neighbor crayon.

You might be a sharp crayon but you might be dull.  You might be a cool color or maybe a dull one.  You might not be used much, or your status might be a small nub because you were used a lot.

You could be used to draw a masterpiece or maybe just for a toddler to color.  You may have been broken into tiny pieces, either on purpose or by accident.  But you are still a crayon no matter if you are broken.

When you smell a box of crayons, it's one smell and we all think of our childhood.  Hey crayon, get over it, you all smell the same even though your color may be different.  Yellow doesn't smell any differently than magenta or blue.

Yellow might be used for the sun.  Blue might be used for the sky.  Green most likely would be the color of the grass.  And white or red might be the color of farmer John's barn.

If you use a black for your entire picture, your world might be dull or even bleak.  It probably will be lack luster and not as pretty as a colorful picture.

I have just described life as we all probably know it.  Full of color, with friends and neighbors whom we should get along with no matter what the color or where they are in the box of life.  Live your color to the fullest.  And if you become dull, sharpen up your status.  A dull crayon is not one who everyone wants to be around.

Third Person Omniscient or Not

I don't really like third person omniscient!

If I'm writing a story, I like to be the center of attention (HA HA HA) so maybe this is the reason I don't like third person omniscient.

When a story is unfurling, and the narrator is going to town,  the characters don't know everything that's going on but this third party person narrator does.  Not fair!!  The third party omniscient means telling a story of a third party....  not me, not you, but her/him.

This used to be a very popular way to tell a story but not so much so now.  Writers really don't like to use the third party omniscient because the writer has to be in the subject's head and then jump to the other's head to be able to tell the story.  It can become confusing believe me.  And you sometimes lose the translation in the story.    Plus the writer has to be privy to all the facts relating to the story and has to be able to set forth the actual thoughts and feelings of the character in the story.  That's hard to do.   When I do this third part omniscient I call myself an oddball second person standing on the sidelines just opening my mouth about someone else.

Now I've told you this I bet you understand third part omniscient to the utmost.  Right???  Wrong I bet.  Well don't be concerned, as I sometimes don't understand it either and get to being third part, and occasionally first person all in the same story.

Well time to go and figure out my next story and see if I hear several person's voices in my mind.  Ooops....I think hearing voices is something else might be wrong with me.

More About Abraham Lincoln

In Springfield, IL in 1839, Abe met Mary Todd.  Three years later they married in Springfield.  The wedded couple spent their honeymoon night at the Globe Tavern and this is the place which is considered as their home for 2 years after their marriage.  Their son Robert was born at the Globe Tavern residence.   This Globe Tavern was a combination tavern, place of lodging and a restaurant.

The family lived on the second floor in a room which was 8 foot by 14 foot.  They took their meals in the common dining room.  The cost was $4.00 per week.

Globe tavern picture taken on the morning of Abe's funeral 1865.

We all know he went on to be the 16th president.  Even though he was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky February 12, 1809, persons in this Menard County, Illinois claim him as their own son.  His family moved from their Southern Indiana residence which was near the current Gentryville in 1830, to a place 10 miles southwest of Decatur on the banks of the Sangamon River. Later that year the family moved to Goose Nest Prairie in Coles County Illinois.

In 1831 young Abe decided to go out on his own and landed in New Salem, Illinois.  He became acquainted with the Rutledge family and became close friends with Ann Rutledge, who later died of typhoid fever.   It is said that a clear relationship developed between Abe and Ann Rutledge.  There are several reports of Abe Lincoln's reaction to her death.  Many thought he became very depressed while a few of the locals thought he became suicidal.

He acually only lived in New Salem Illinois for between 6 and 7 years, but his ties have remained throughout current day history.

Just a few trivia items about Abe Lincoln which you might not have known.

 1.  Abe Lincoln was the tallest president.  An artist measured Abe while he was in the White House and it's documented he was 6 feet 3 and 3/4 inches tall in his stocking feet although in most instances it has been rounded to 6 foot 4 inches tall.  His shoe size is normally listed between 12 and 14.

 2.  Abe was brought up by Baptist parents, and occasionally attended Presbyterian church in Springfield and Washington DC.  He was married by an Episcopal minister.  He never joined any church during his life.

 3.  Abe did not attend his father's funeral and, in fact,  did not get along with his father.  Upon hearing of his father's declining health he refused to see him and told his stepbrother to tell his father "Say to him that if we could meet now, it is doubtful whether it would not be more painful than pleasant."

 4.  Abe Lincoln was never photographed with his wife Mary.

 5.  In 1952 a researcher found an open casket photo of Abe Lincoln in the Illinois Historical Library.  Until then it was thought there were no open casket photos.

Only known photo of Abe Lincoln in his casket with open lid.  Taken
at city hall in New York.  Found in 1952 in the Illinois Historical
Library files by a researcher and until then it was thought there were
no open casket photos.

 6.  All three floors of the Ford Theater collapsed in June, 1893 killing 22 and injuring many others.  At the time it was a warehouse storing war records.  It was later rebuilt on the inside.

There are so many things I didn't know about Abe and I'm sure some things you also didn't know.  I will be doing periodic articles about Abe and his interesting life among our ancestors here in Menard County.  He was a neighbor to many of our relatives and travelled the roads and fields which we now know.  Watch for more in the near future.

Friends.  A subject we all are familiar with.  We have friends.  We make friends.  We lose friends.
We get new friends.  We have cyber friends whom we will most likely never meet.  We have friends we wish we would have never met.   We lose old friends.  We have friends for a lifetime even though we don't see them often.  We lost friends because of something happening between friends.  We make up with friends. We never make up with some friends.

Friends die.  Friends live.  We send messages to friends.  We don't have any contact with some friends.

Friendships remain strong.  Friendships wither on the vine.  Friendships can develop into lifelong and close relationships.

A friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.

Don't forget about your friends.  Call them.  Talk to them.

"But always remember to call them friend."

Razydonkulous!

Rather be razzy than to be a stooge.

The days of fall are coming soon.  Some call that fun and wonderful while others call it work. I call it razydonkulous!  Now I'm sure you know what that means. It means epiculous.  Now I know you know what that means.  Epiculous means ridonkulous.

So do I have to explain it further.  Everyone knows what ridonkulous means.  It means the same as razydonkulous.  And, sometimes ridonkulous is spelled ridonculous or even redonculous so maybe now you recognize what I mean when I put the other spellings.

But anyhoos>>>>>>   Fall is time for weenie roasts and a bunch of clown parties.  When a bunch of clowns get together in a time of razydonkulous proportions, everyone has a heck of a good time.  There might be chilli (spelled the Springfield way of course) or some kind of soup and a bunch of hot doggers or maybe a few cheezeburgers with the works.  And every time someone bites into those massive fall sammiches, ketchup and mustard spurts across the way and lands on your neighbor sitting to the far right.  Everyone laughs, including you and the neighbor who got the "works".

Any way you look at it, fall can be a fun time.  But of course, when you look around the corner and see what's coming behind fall, you might get to feeling a bit of altered perception where one sees the world as dark and nasty and cold as heck.  Typically called depression.  But when the time following fall gets here, we might all get to feeling a bit that way.  It typically feels the same as when you get to the end of a good movie or when you complete a video game on the losing side.

So.....after you read this razzy dazzy thing today, think about how razydonkulous fall will be for you.  By the way, it also means "beyond ridiculous".  But, why not have a good time and impress your friends.  Use your new word "razydonkulous" three times this week just to have a ridonkulous time.  Using it might help ward off those feelings of old man "shhhhh" winter coming.  Bodacious!

I think of my blog as a one of a kind cartel.  It's a conglomerate group formed in the best interest of our home town to promote a mutual interest.   I guess it's a bunch of people who like Me and only me (just kidding) ROFLMBO.

Really it's a bunch of people who like to read quasi-cartel type information and articles written by a dowdy old pantsuit woman.  So that must mean this is a "dowdy pantsuit cartel" written by a dowdy old woman bound forever to be dressed in a pantsuit of varied colors and patterns.  Everyone knows only old women wear pantsuits....well.... I wear pants and some of them are suits so I guess that fits me.  Boxy jackets like Hillary Clinton and wrinkles go together.  And, when you wear them while you are writing a blog article you become one of those dowdy old women.  So the result is a dowdy pantsuit cartel.  But that definitely is better than me writing a cheeky monkey blog.  It would be full of bananas and monkeys picking fleas.

We all know that Greenview is the land of "cool".  Urban cool that is.  So this old dowdy pantsuit woman will keep on wearing her pantsuit and chistling her writings on the stone tablets of progress.  So now it's time to go for now....time to change my pantsuit.  Another day another pantsuit.

Blue Chickens In A Red Barn

A Bunch of Blue Chickens Running Around

If I told you there were blue chickens running around and nesting in a red barn, would you believe me?  Of course you would.  Everyone knows that blue chickens are the best tasting chickens alive.

Red chickens are tough old birds, and even after cleaning, still have pin feathers that can't be taken out since the skin on these old birds is so tough.  These old Red Chickens like to flock together and make fun of the Blue Chickens.  Red Chickens think the only way to be is the red way.

One time I saw a Red Chicken start pecking a Blue Chicken on the head.  That Blue Chicken wasn't a coward so he pecked back.  If you can imagine a couple of chickens going at it and all the time flying around the hen yard, you'll understand what a sight it was.  First the Red Chicken would peck the Blue Chick on the head and then the Blue Chicken would put its beek at the base of the tail feathers and pull with all his might.  Out came a full beakful of tail feathers.  That got that old Red Chicken dancing.  Before long the Blue Chicken didn't have much top notch left but, the old Red Chicken had absolutely no tail feathers left and even part of his wings were cropped and frail looking.  He was a sight to see.  But did the old Red Chicken learn from this.....NO he didn't.  It wasn't long and he was at it again.  He believed his breed of red chicken was the best and he was going to prove it.  I call this stubborness.

Sometimes the way of the Red Chickens isn't always the best.  But usually the Reds are so stubborn they aren't willing to change.  Their barn has been red for so long they believe red is the only color in the rainbow.

Sometimes a change to a Red Chicken's diet and overall habits might benefit the connoisseur of fine Chicken dining.  The Blue might know more about what to eat and do to make his self more palatable.  Red Chickens, with their stubborness, typically won't change their habits so they remain tough.

The moral of this story is.  If the Red Chickens don't change, the barn is going to get repainted and at that point the barn color is going to change to Blue.  And, you won't see many Red Chickens running around  the farm yard.  Instead there will be a bunch of young, tender and willing to learn, Blue Chickens running around.

Just a fair warning to the Red Chickens in the Red Barn.  I think your barn might be painted before long.  As long as it isn't green, you should be ok.  Those Green Chickens are aliens and don't belong.

Greenview At Its Best

Just some things I remember about my young days in Greenview.

 1.  Remember when the high school gymnasium had to be strengthened and there were big steel square plates up and down the face of the school.  The ivy on the front of the school was cut out to put in these steel plates and that made the school look dumb.  Then later on the new addition covered them up.  But the tennis court went by the wayside.

 2.  Remember the old milk machines in the school.  It cost a penny or two.  Put your money in and then slide them milk to the side to get it out.

 3.  Remember when Greenview had real homecomings with carnival rides and fun things to do instead of the boring "no carnival" attitude the CIA takes now days.

 4.  Remember the dances which were held in the old grade school gymnasium.

 5.  Remember biddy basketball for the little kids.  The older boys would coach the boys playing basketball and the older girls would coach the little girls on how to be a great cheerleader.

 6.  Remember the ice cream soda's at Emma's Corner Cafe.

 7.  Remember when the bus would let kids off at the Corner Cafe upon returning from an away game.

 8.  Remember when Locky was driving the school bus with the cheerleaders and the glee club and the axle broke on the bus.  Lucky Locky kept the bus from turning over.  It was a wild ride and we all were scared to death, but liked it when the team bus pulled up behind us and we all got to ride the same bus.  Those ongoing relationships between players and cheerleaders got a chance to blossom during that dark bus ride home.

 9.  Remember Gerald McKee sitting on the park bench blowing spit bubbles.

10. Remember when the post office was in the old First State Bank Building.

11.  Remember when the K & K Grocery Market and Schmittys Tavern burned in 1963.

12.  Remember when Tripps Lumberyard was on the south side of the square.

13.  Remember when you had to crank your old phone to get the operator.

14.  Remember when a bunch of kids would play baseball at the old grade school baseball diamond.

15.  Remember the particular smell of the grocery stores upon entering.

16.  Remember back when no one had air conditioning in their houses.

Quote For The Day
Part of the success in life is to eat what
you like and let the food fight it out inside.
--Mark Twain

If I tell you a story today, do you remember it tomorrow?  If you're like me, after I eat lunch, I have a hard time remembering if I had lunch let alone what I ate for lunch.  I suffer from CRS.....and you know what that is  "Can't Remember Sh*t".

But time passes on.  And, besides, who cares what I had for lunch.  If I can't remember, then no one else will give a darn.

One way to cure CRS is memory training.  Which means paying someone else to help a person  remember.

Another way is not give a darn.  Who cares.  All oldies have a tendency to forget so I won't be alone.  Not really a cure...just an alternative.

And lastly (is that a word?), is to slather on Vicks Vapor Rub, all over your chest, and around your nose, put a hot rag on your chest and smell the vapors.  Hope to heck it gets rid of your cold.  Crap...I forgot we were talking about cures for remembering.  That cure was for a stuffed up nose.

History - Current - Future

Time Marches On

First came our history.  Then time brought the current.  And before long it will be the future.  Where do I stand in this timeline?

Well....since I'm here today and it's current time, I suppose I will be here tomorrow, so that's future.  My accurate predictions for the future would be so far off, I won't even attempt to say that I can make accurate predictions....a psychic I'm not......maybe a gypsy at times, but being psychic just doesn't fit into my repertoire of skills.

But just for my readers, I will get out my crystal ball and tell the future.  First of all I will make my predictions about the welfare of old people.   This is called a current and a future prediction.   As I see it, old people are young people who have aged for many moons.  These old people know a lot but as they get older, they forget more than they ever knew.  When asked about things, they revert back to their childhood and act like they know nothing.  Now this could be selective but in the majority of cases, I think old people are just big babies and they actually don't know.  Oh boy, I can't wait for this young chick to get old.  (cough cough)  I predict that all old people will eventually not be on this earth.  You know the old saying...dust to dust.  Well that's what I predict...they will be gone like the wind.  As long they don't wind up as dust bunnies under my bed when someone scatters their ashes, I will be fine with that analysis of old people being dust.

Now I will make a prediction about this upcoming election. This is called a future prediction. I predict that someone will win.  Whether or not the winner will be the choice of everyone concerned, it's doubtful, but someone will win.  I just hope the election hurries and finishes as I am sick of seeing posts and tv ads about who is better than the other....politicians are all a bunch of hooey .... don't shoot the messenger, it says that in my crystal ball.

The next prediction is a current and history prediction.  I know for a fact that history was here and then gone.  No one wrote anything down so my prediction is that I'm never going to be able to write down what happened in history.  I can barely write down what is happening in current let alone in history.  Plus, I predict that if I continue to try to document a lot of history I will one of those "big baby old persons", not even knowing who the heck I am because this history prediction stuff will make you go bonkers.

Now for the real future predictions.  Today is yesterday's tomorrow and tomorrow is today's tomorrow.  So if that's the case, then I can't wait until next week as that will be next week's bunch of yesterdays.  I won't even know what time it is by then....my mind will be boggled so much.  Being a psychic makes me need a new crystal ball. Mine has big cracks in it right now.

Here's my poem for Greenview.

Greenview Greenview you're getting old

Buildings decrepit and full of mold.

Never leave us that's for sure

Be here in our memories, oh yes sir.

But when we all leave you, remember us,

And, by all means, make no fuss.

So now it's time to say good-bye

So tell us the truth and give us no lies.

We want to know the history of the town,

You tell us now and don't let us down.

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.

Trouble no one about their religion,

Jabberhocky!

Time For A Large Amount of Nonsense

I decided this morning that this definitely is a nonsense day.  As someone once said (me know not who) ....  "To appreciate nonsense requires a serious interest in life."

When I think of the word nonsense, I always think of the Lewis Carroll nonsense poem called "Jabberwocky".  I love that word.  It makes so much sense rather than nonsense.  It makes me think of a person who jabbers and who is full of hocky (poop doncha know).

When I got to thinking about hocky (poop) I realized that there are a lot of words for hocky.  I would think I need to refer to the hocky thesaurus. So I tried.  When I went to look up a bunch of the words, I found the poop thesaurus.  Do you believe that??!!

When you think about that word, it can be a verb or a noun.  But there sure are a lot more noun synonyms than verbs.  I know poop is a difficult subject to talk about, but we all do it....so what the heck is wrong with admitting that we are all full of brown bombs.  Or ,another color if we ate something weird.  I supposed the most scientific term I can think of is to call it fecal matter.  But everyone knows I'm not a fecal matter speaking person.....I would rather call it a more low class trailer park term.  Like crap or hocky or do do .... those are a few of my more tongue rolling picks.

See I told you it was a nonsense day.  Nonsense will get you nowhere and will also get you everywhere.  If you have too much nonsense surrounding your very actions, you might not be asked to come around again.  But if the other person in the transaction is also a "jabberhocky" type person, then your nonsense will get you whatever you want.  Just ask me.  I've been a jabberer since I was born and my dad always said I was full of it....so I guess I'm a jabberhocky type person.

So climb out of your boring day, and be a jabberhocky with me.  I know you have a serious interest in life.....especially about living until tomorrow.

Death of a Resident

Old Greenview Stuff

1971 - The Greenview Review and the Athens Free Press consolidated in January under the name Menard County Review.

March 20, 1971 - Ronnie Doggett lost his life in a one car accident on the Middletown blacktop east of town.

April 13, 1971 - Harry Jones, owner of the Owl Garage for 42 years, died on this day.

December 20, 1971 - Tommy Parks III, drowned in the Sangamon River, near the Gudgel Bridge.  His car was swept from a flooded road west of the bridge and it is believed that he accidentally ran into the flooded area and lost his footing when he attempted to leave the car.

Hickory Dickory Dock....the mouse ran up the clock.  What a stupid thing to do!  Could the mouse tell time and that was the reason he ran up the clock??  Or, was someone leaving cheese up the clock trying to catch the mouse?

It's always bothered me why that mouse ran up the clock.  It would seem he had no earthly reason to run up that clock.  So when that old clock struck one, it must have scared the mouse almost to death so he ran down.  Serves him right....he shouldn't have run up the clock in the first place.

Hope you had a nonsense good time here on the blog.
