Are You Going Green?

How to go green or at least act like it!

Are you heading towards saving this earth by going green?  Well I think we all are but, sometimes we just don't know we are.  If you plant a live green plant in your yard, you're helping the environment as plants provide oxygen to the air....and if they're big enough they can provide shade so that other plants will grow.  So be a "Mr. Rogers kind of neighbor" and plant a huge old plant so that your neighbor can come over and take advantage of your "greening of American" by coming over to your yard to sit under the plant's shade.

Plants help to provide moisture to the environment.  This moisture might mean that your yard gets more rain than others, so don't plant too many new ones.   And, of course don't forget that by providing all of these mentioned things, the air temperature might be a bit lower.....I hope this is only for summer because I sure don't want it any lower in the winter.

But planting things isn't the only way to go green.  Your shreds from your paper shredder can be worked into your ground, providing much richer soil, plus it acts as a mulch for your plants.  But dang ....it would be my luck that some info hacker would probably come into my garden and dig up my shreds and put all of those tiny little strips together to get my credit card information....but wow are they going to be surprised....because all that my credit cards bills show is that they can't steal nothing cause their ain't nothing left to steal .... "rejected" is what they will get.  But maybe they could pay the bill when they get those account numbers.

One of the best ways to go green is to stop eating out and stop bringing those non-composting containers home. If you're like me, you are probably tired of seeing those Styrofoam containers sticking out of the ground all over your yard .... left from your efforts to bury all those dang things.   Plus if you stop eating out, the weight you lose can be put on the garden soil as fertilizer.....and just think.....you will need to plant more plants so you will have more veggies to eat and think of the shade and moisture you will have in your yard with 354 tomato plants growing in your garden plus 86 bean plants that climb bean poles....and if you plant the giant bean plants, the jolly green giant might even visit your house.  That's going green!

Some of you just might not be ready to "go green" nor ready to follow my "sound advice" but, in case you are one of these people, I would advise that you might want to at least pretend you are going green.  Buy some plastic plants and stick them in the ground.....bury your take-home containers a bit deeper or heck bury them deep in the garbage bags so your neighbors don't see them sticking out of the garbage bags and send them to the dump so that they have to contend with them.  Green is good....but green money is better.  That's why I plant my paper shreds, I'm trying to grow paper money.

You do know this is a poor imitation of a spoof??!!

The History of Menard County
Taken from the History of Menard and Mason Counties - 1879 book.

"Considerable settlements were made in other parts of old Sangamon County
before any were made in the limits of what is now Menard. The reader will
bear in mind that this county had no existence till 1839, hence the history of
the early settlement and development of the county is connected with the
history of Sangamon.

Although the white man had frequently visited the "Sangamon country,"
as it was called, and had traveled over the beautiful prairies, and explored the
deep woods of this locality, yet we have no evidence that any one ever settled
in the area of the county prior to April, 1819. The first settler, according to
the best evidence we have, was Mr. John Clary, who came with his family at
the date just named. He settled in a grove in the southwestern part of the
county, near the present site of the village of Tallula. This grove was ever
after known by the name of its first settler, and is to-day noticed on the maps
and known far and near as Clary's Grove. Mr. Clary settled on the south-
west quarter of Section 32, Town 18, Range 7, the land being now owned by
George Spears, Sr. Mr. Clary built what was known to the pioneer settlers as
a "'three-faced camp," that is, he erected three walls, leaving one entire side
open. These walls were built about seven feet high, when poles were laid across
at a distance of about three feet apart, and on these a roof of clapboards was
laid, and these boards were held on by weight-poles laid on them. These
boards were some four feet in length, and from eight inches to a foot wide, and
were split out of oak timber with an instrument called a froe. No floor was
laid in the camp, nor was there any such thing as window or chimney con-
nected with the structure ; neither would you see such thing as a door-shutter
in all this edifice. Now, these are facts, and we doubt not that the young men,
who are now growing up, wonder what the people did for light, and where their
fires were built, as well as how they found ingress and egress. The one side
of the structure that was left out answered all these purposes. Just in front
of the open side was built a large log heap, which served to give warmth in
cold weather, and for cooking purposes all the year round. Abundance of
light was admitted by this aperture, while on either side of the fire were ample
passage-ways for passing in and out. We describe this camp thus particularly,
because in such as this the early settlers spent the first few years of their
sojourn in the new country. Mr. Clary had a family when he first came Judge Robert Clary, recently deceased, was six weeks old when the family settled in the grove.

The large and respectable family of Clarys, now living in
the county, are the descendants of this pioneer. Not long after Clary settled
in the grove, Mr. Solomon Pratt, with his family, took up their residence in
a cabin on Section 3, Town 17, Range 7, this being in the vicinity of Mr.
Clary. During the fall of 1819 and the spring of 1820, emigration came in
pretty rapidly, and, there being no record kept of the order in which they
came, and the names of some being forgotten, it is impossible to get the detail
correct. About this time, the Armstrongs, Greens and Spears came, a more
detailed account of whose settlement will be given in another place. "

Recipe
Do you like Guacamole but don't know how to make it?  I love the stuff and found a recipe quite some time ago so that I can make my own.

Guacamole
3 peeled & seeded avocados
1 small tomato diced small (I use Roma so less seeds)
1 small onion minced small
2 cloves of garlic - minced
2 tablespoons Lime juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cumin
4 drops of hot sauce (I use sriracha the best because it has flavor)

Use a fork or an electric mixer to mash the avocados and then add the rest of the ingredients.  Let is sit for a couple of hours to blend the flavors.  If your avocados aren't soft put them in a brown paper bag and put them in a dark cabinet for a couple of days to ripen and soften.  Serve with tortilla chips, put on a taco salad....will keep a few days.  Can half the recipe for smaller amount by using two avocados....and add more of anything else you want.

The corporate world is falling behind.  It's still in the 1980's with the striped ties and maybe even those inch wide ties.  And the corporate woman's world is still using those 1970 cloth belts with their attire.  Isn't it time for the corporate world to become hip and in the real world!?!?!?

In today's world, a lot of corporate persons could work at home using their personal computer to keep in contact with their worrisome employer, who probably believes the employee will still be in bed at noon and won't really be working and slaving away at home.  That's bunk!

Actually the big corporation could probably save money....fewer parking costs for the employees....fewer missed days.....increased productivity due to fewer interruptions in the office environment.

But those employers just don't want to trust employees at home.  And when they don't, I say set up the web cam schedule so the employee has to be in front of the old web camera at least once every hour....the employer will see that by far the majority of employees will be dedicated at home workers simply because they won't want to lose their new found freedom from the office crap.

I say dump the 1980's striped and pencil thin ties and the 1970 cloth belts....let your hair down Mr./Mrs. Employer ....if there is any way you can..... let those employees stay home and work.....and if you have to, require at least one day in the office per week!  Update your wardrobe corporate America....and get with it!

Friday the 13th....Bad Luck Omens Will Get Ya

Do you always have bad luck on Friday the 13th?

There are persons who are really paranoid about Fridays which fall on the 13th day of the month.  When a month begins on a Sunday, the 13th will fall on a Friday.  Friday the 13th won't occur in January again until 2017 and then again in 2023.  In 2012 there will be another two months which will host Friday the 13th....April and July.  So if today doesn't hold enough bad luck for you, you can try again during these two months.

People have this superstition that the number 13 is unlucky and also that Fridays are unlucky.  I've never had a real problem with either (knock on wood)....but just watch.....today will probably be the worst day I've had in years.....sometimes when I say something then the reverse happens.....the luck of the Irish I guess....NOT!

When you fear Friday the 13th, it's called "Parakevidekatriaphobics".  What a mouth full that is!  It means the affected person is afflicted with morbid, irrational fear of Friday the 13th.  I don't have this....do you???  Doctors feel that perhaps 21 million suffer from this condition.  WOW!

Typically I just go my merry way on any Friday the 13th.  I remember having employees who refused to come to work on that day.  Some won't buy a lottery ticket....but I know someone who always goes to the casino on this day as she feels it is a lucky day for her instead of the unlucky day for most.

Some of the legends/fears which surround this date are:  If 13 people sit around the table for dinner, one will die within the year. Many buildings don't have a 13th floor.  Many cities don't have a 13th street/avenue.  If you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil's luck (Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Jeffery Dahmer, Theodore Bundy all have 13 letters in their name).  There are 13 witches in a coven.   But.......the Chinese and the ancient Egyptians think/thought the 13th is lucky.

If so many people think the number 13 is unlucky and many people think Friday is unlucky so that means:

Unlucky 13 + Unlucky Friday = Unluckier Friday the 13th...the unluckiest day of all.

As you go through the day today, think positive.  Tell yourself and the devil spirits that this is the luckiest day you have ever lived.  Go buy a lottery ticket but be very careful when you drive there.....because your luck might just be that of an unlucky person.

Old Things In Greenview

Do you remember the old post office in the old bank building....it had those little boxes with the combination dial in the front.  Occasionally you see one of these at local auctions as they sold them when the new post office was built.

Do you remember when we had a marching band with an accomplished majorette....Janet Tice.

Do you remember when we bought school books and supplies at Whit Stone's drug store.

Do you remember when we had a laundromat in a really skinny building in the downtown area for a couple of years.

Do you remember when Greenview had a homecoming queen each year.

Do you remember when the grade school classes were involved in Biddy Basketball.

Do you remember when Doctor Pulauskis came to town and we finally had a doctor...and his wife was his nurse....and you couldn't understand either of them because they were natives of Lithuania!

Do you remember there were multiple piano teachers in town and they held recitals for their students.....I remember playing Itsy Bitsy Spider at one recital during my first year of lessons.

Do you remember as a child growing up in Greenview, you had to make your own fun and never really feeling bored living here.

Do you remember having multiple grocery stores, multiple cafes, multiple churches, multiple bars, multiple gas stations ..... and we are left with nothing like this now!

These are just a few things to jog your memory.  We all have memories of growing up in vintage Greenview....some good, some bad, some fuzzy, some clear in mind and some we don't want to remember.....but we lived here and will always be a Greenviewanite.

Recipe
I like Hashbrown Casserole but due to the sodium content and the fat grams associated with the mushroom soup most hash brown casserole recipes use, I had to come up with a different recipe.  I found this recipe and really like it....it takes a bit of work but is worth it.  It's kind of like Cracker Barrel Hashbrown Casserole and I really like the taste better than the typical recipe using mushroom or chicken soup.

Lowfat, Low Sodium Hash Brown Casserole
26 oz shredded hash browns
2 cups lower fat colby cheese
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 cup milk
1/2 cup fat free lower sodium beef broth
2 Tablespoon lower fat margarine, melted
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt (I use low salt and only use 1/2 teaspoon and Mrs. Dash also)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Combine the hash browns, onion and cheese in a big bowl.  Mix the milk, beef broth, 1/2 the melted margarine, garlic powder, salt and pepper in another bowl and mix well.  Pour over the hash browns and mix well.  Put the other tablespoon of  low fat melted margarine in a no-stick skillet and when hot, add the hashbrown mixture.  Fry until brown and then turn over and fry until the cheese is melted (about 7 minutes total).  Spoon into a greased 8 x 11 casserole and bake at 400 degrees until dark brown on top....about 45 minutes or maybe a bit longer.

There are advantages to being a woman over a man.....the men might not think so, but I think so....but I totally agree there are advantages of being a man,.
Being able to get out of a car and pee is a great advantage for a man....you can't imagine how hard it is for a woman to try to pee outside .... it ends up showing the old shiny white hiney in the squat position.  Not good. Some of the other advantages men have.... men get paid more....they typically get better jobs than women...they're physically stronger than women....and the list goes on.

But as I see it there are advantages as a woman.  we can attract men cause we have boobs....most men are boob men.  And when the lovely lady is pregnant they become gigantic boobs.  Us women didn't/don't get drafted to go to the service during war times.  We typically live longer.  We are stronger in soul and we don't get all ruffled when our masculinity is questioned....because we have none!

Women are "softer"...softer skin, softer personalities and softer voices are just some of the softer things.  We can wear clothes and look sexy....men just wear clothes and look .... well nice, but usually not sexy.  We are cuter!!

Men need us....even though most won't admit to it....to clean, to to cook, to keep their sanity, help keep them on the straight and narrow.

Just some other things we are good at:   we "put up with" men well, we are good listeners, for most of us, we like agreement better than conflict, we tend to pay a lot of attention to detail, we have more instincts toward crafts and the arts.

See there is an intrinsic value to being a woman.....if the job environment would just recruit us women and give us a chance to get our foot in the door, give us training, recognize and cultivate our talents and then support our efforts, the world would be much better......at least that's my opinion, biased as it is for the female population.

Now you men out there, don't become steamy and bent out of shape that there are advantages to being a woman over a man.....remember there may be after-life and second life rebirth in the hereafter, and, you could come back to earth as a woman the next time!

A House Painted Pink

Would you paint your house pink??

A couple of days ago I happened to be driving down the street and lo and behold I see a pepto bismol pink house.  The front door and the window casings all were painted pink  God awful color if you ask me.  And to boot the fence was a bright blue.  It was so bad that if a person didn't have diarrhea, just looking at this pepto color was enough to give it to you.

As I sit here pondering about writing to tell you I saw this horrible pink house, it makes me wonder just why would anyone want to paint their house bright pink?  And pepto bismol pink to boot.  As I see it there could be a number of reasons.....I'm not sure they would be considered valid reasons but....

First of all I will give them the benefit of a doubt and say that maybe they bought the wrong color.  uh huh....sure!  Or maybe the store mixed the wrong color and all of those gallons of pepto bismol would go to waste so why not go ahead and use it on the house. uh huh....sure!

Perhaps they knew exactly what they were doing and wanted it pink so everyone would talk about it.  Maybe they thought it would get them on reality TV.  Sometimes weird things get you on those kind of shows doncha know.  Look at the convicted former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich....his hair is weird and it got him on a couple of  reality shows....and his wife was on one too and she even ate a tarantula (now that is weird!).  See people do weird things for weird reasons.

Perhaps the city paid them to paint it pink so it could become a phenomenon on the city register or in the historical register.  Or the city wanted a pink house that was easily recognizable in their quest to give good directions from one spot to another in the city.

By jove I bet I have the real reason.....they wanted to attract Better Homes and Gardens to take pictures and do a feature story....or maybe House Beautiful would be better......or maybe Mad Magazine if you ask my opinion.

But for now the pink house mystery and why they painted it that awful pepto bismol pink will remain a mystery....cause I'm not gonna go up to the door and knock for fear that someone who looks like the Addams Family "Lurch" might open the door.

Old Tyme Greenview

1959  -  Mrs. Earle Eldridge sold the Eldridge and Eldridge fertilizer business to Schrock Fertilizer Service.  Burton Zeitler and family moved to Greenview and Mr. Zeitler assumed the management of this business.

1959  -  One of the oldest buildings on the village squar was razed on March 9.  The building was located between the Legion Hall and the Greenview Fire Station and was reportedly built in about 1867.  Conklin Barber Shop is housed in the new modern building.

1959  -  A barn on the Billy Ross Edwards farms was destroyed by fire when struck by lightening August 29 during the storm that hit this area.

1960  -  The last runs of the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio passenger trains between Bloomington and Kansas City were made April 14, marking the end of rail passenger and mail service to and from Greenview.

1960  -  Leslie McKee retired from the grocery business after devoting thirty years to the business.  He operated the McKee Grocery at the same location for twenty-three years.  (Note....for those of us who remember Les and Gerald, the business was in an old garage of sorts and had partial dirt floors.....not too clean but the hunks of bologna were good and most only used this store in times where the other grocers weren't open!)

1960  -  On November 21, at about 8pm a fire struck and completely devoured the James Willis home on the Milo Vogt farm south of Greenview.  The Willis family was not at home when the fire started.

1961  -  Arnold Berg, owner of Berg's Autobody of Greenview and James (Perry) Altig became partners in a new business venture called Greenview Welding and Machine.  The shop and business was in the northwest part of town.  James (Perry) Altig died later this year on December 20 at the age of 42.

1961  -  Mr. and Mrs. Jack Luscher, owners of the Greenview Review for over thirteen years sold their interests in this weekly publication to the Petersburg Observer effective June 26.

1962  -  The new post office was officially opened for business in Greenview on Tuesday, January 2.  Andrew Fitzgerald was postmaster with Miss Jennie Godbey as clerk.

1962  - Minister Lyle Brassfield minister of the Greenview Christian Church for almost five years resigned to accept a pastorate in Alma, Michigan.  Rev. Richard Robinson was called as the new minister of the Christian Church.

1962  -  Donald Beatty resigned as Superintendent of the local schools to accept a similar position at Northwestern Community Unit School in McDonough County.

Recipe

I love coconut pie and I really like it when I don't have to make a pie crust.  This pie makes its own crust...and is really good.

Magic Coconut Pie
4 eggs, well beaten
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 cups milk
1/2 cup melted margarine
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup coconut

Gradually add sugar to beaten eggs.  Beat in milk.  Sift dry ingredients and add to first mixture.  Add melted margarine, coconut and vanilla.  Pour into 2 eight (8) inch pie pans which have been lightly greased.  Bake in moderate oven 350 degrees F. for about one hour or until set, depending on different ovens. (Note I have used a 10 inch deep dish pie pan instead of the two eight inch pans.)

If someone throws something at you, you duck.  It must be something in our instinct to know when to duck and when something is coming.  Most of the time at least.

If you think about a fly sitting on the kitchen counter, he knows when to fly away.  He knows that fly swatter is coming his way.  Now, I really don't how he knows but in the case of my fly swatter, I miss every time.  I must be as slow as molasses in my swing of the swatter.  But, when I think of a fly's eyes, I once read where they see motion so I guess when they see this big mama coming at them, they prepare for flight, probably thinking I'm going to sit on them or something.  They don't even think about the big swatter I have in my hand...they worry about the "big" all right...good and big.

I don't think us humans have the uncanny ability to see motion as well as the fly so if someone throws something at us, our reflexes, and especially my reflexes, are such that we might get hit with the flying object.  Yesterday it was the pillow the other person in this house threw to me so I could lie down on the sofa and become the goddess of the tv remote.  Yes it hit me....but being a pillow it didn't do much damage.....just did damage to my ego because I didn't see it coming.  Guess I need to get my eyes checked....when you can't see a huge pillow coming you way, the glasses just aren't right!!!

Insulted By The Brush

Has Your Toothbrush Ever Fought Back?

Every morning it's the same.  Get up, do the strenuous stretching in order to prevent muscle sagging.  First the neck from side to side to help with that sagging old neck skin.  Then the facial muscles .... give yourself a facial a day is like yoga for the skin.  Then comes the body stretching....left arm over the head and hold for the count of 15, then the other arm over the head....next comes putting your hands on your shoulders and doing the chicken wing circles, first frontwards then backwards for about 10 circles each way.  After that comes bending towards your toes and holding for 15 seconds then standing upright and putting your right leg forward and left leg stretched out behind you and holding for about 15 seconds.  Whew...stretching done.  Next comes brushing the teeth to get rid of night ick.

Go into the bathroom and ..... where the heck is my toothbrush???  It's the white one with the green and red stripes....it's an Aquafresh.  The only one in the house that is an Aquafresh.  Easily recognizable brush and not likely to be used by the tooth fairy or others in search of a toothbrush to use.  I had this toothbrush for quite a while and should have replaced it but....dang it....it was my favorite.  It fit my mouth and around my toofers just right.

I searched the bathroom.  First the toothbrush cup, then both drawers in the vanity.  Evasion!!  Come to me little toothbrush but no it didn't.  It just didn't want to be found!  Was it fighting back?  Maybe be it was tired and didn't want to enter the black hole, full of bacteria and that awful smell of morning breath!!!  Where are you my little striped brushie......LOST!  I absolutely couldn't find that brush and had to open a new package which we always keep on hand for guests who arrive with no toothbrush in hand.

So now I have a new toothbrush and feel very insulted that the old one hid so well just to avoid me this morning.  But.......the latest news is that I found that little sucker ..... in the bottom of the waste can.  It fell from the counter and must have jumped about one and a half feet to land in the waste can.  Wonder how that happened?  Maybe the tooth fairy came and saw the pitiful shape of that pathetic brush and helped that brush jump to the waste can.
I feel insulted .... my brush didn't even care enough to say goodbye.  It fought back and won.  Goodbye old friend.  I'll say goodbye even though you didn't.

Springfield At Its Best

Did you know that when you google Springfield Illinois metro area it shows it consists of two counties.....Sangamon and Menard.  That is so interesting because Menard County at one time was considered a part of Sangamon county.  No wonder we all have an interest in Springfield and the near area.  We are a part of it.  I love the history of our small town, but our ancestors weren't the best picture takers and after a while the photos run out.....at least until I can find some more in my quest for the old stuff.

Here are some more photos and photo postcards of old Springfield places and businesses.  You should be able to click on most pictures to get an little larger view.   Enjoy!

The kid in me comes out frequently.  The stories I want to write showcases me as the protagonist.  Me, as the lead character, probably just wouldn't work.  I would be too much of a drama queen.  I love drama.

Then after the story would begin I probably would want to then be the antagonist.  Because starting a good conflict never hurt anyone.  The kid in me just wants to bust out and be here!

But I must contain those feelings.  It might not be normal for someone to want to be a kid so much.  One who wants to jump rope and chew bubble gum and ride on the merry-go-round and the carousel and skate on the sidewalk and jump rope.  Then do the limbo walk and the Mexican hat dance.  Can you imagine how this might affect an older person?  Three days in the old recliner with a heating pad as well as an icepack and a double dose of arthritis medicine.  I think I will restrain myself.

Skip To My Lou My Darling

When was the last time you skipped?

I remember skipping with a lot of my friends when I was a kid.  I remember hopscotch too....and a couple of years ago I saw a chalk hopscotch grid on the sidewalk and I did it!!  But I don't think it was a skip I was doing....more like a hop, charge, gallop and maybe a skitter....and I know I looked like a buffalo in a china shop.  But I tried.

People skip all the time....they skip out on bills.  They skip court.  They skip jail.  They skip a couple of steps in a procedure.  They skip out of their wedding.  There are lots of things to skip about and out of.

One time I had to work overtime....the big building was empty except for me and the security guard who knew me well.  I went to my floor and started to skip to my office but I kept on skipping and skipped around the floor.  When I got to my office my phone rang.....CAUGHT!  It was the security guard laughing and laughing....he saw me on the cameras.....I invited him up to my floor to skip too but he laughed more.  When I heard that phone ring in my office,  I felt like the caller was going to say "GO TO YOUR ROOM NOW!"  Oh well...I had fun.

It's my personal feeling that grumpy old women and grumpy old men would be a lot less grumpier if they skipped....I mean the real foot skipping.  I know it ain't pretty to see a bunch of old fat and hairless women and men skipping but who cares.....it's awesome that we feel young enough to do it!!  Skip Skip Skip To My Lou My Darling!  Where's my sidewalk chalk?

Old Passage About Petersburg
This passage is from a story called The History of Petersburg, narrated by J. Colby Beekman.  I don't know the year it was written.

"They had the city of Petersburg laid out in 1832-1833 and after the town was surveyed they sat back and waited for customers to come. Well, they didn’t come. Petersburg was passing through the same throws that other pioneer towns were. Now we go out west to see these pioneer towns, those ghost towns while we have them right here. We have a resurrected one right across the street here. We get on-half mile north of where Arthur Johnston lives over towards Curtis and out where the cornfields are (I don’t know whether there was ever a house there or not) is where NEW MARKET was surveyed and laid out. East of Petersburg, about one-half mile off of the hard road, there was a town named GREENSBURG laid out. Farther north along the Sangamon River was HURON and MILLER’S FERRY, but later on they were located in Mason County, but they were originally in Menard because Menard County at one time comprised what is now the County of Mason and Menard. When the court house fight was on for where they were to locate the seat of justice, all those towns were candidates for the courthouse but Huron and Miller’s Ferry were removed form the picture because the legislature about that time cut off the north part of Menard County and made Mason County out of it and that took Huron and Miller’s Ferry over into Mason County. Along about 1835, Warburton and Lukins sold their interests. It hadn’t grown very much – the city that they had laid out. They sold it to HEZEKIAH KING and JOHN TAYLOR. The town was re-surveyed. I was allowed one, a good many years ago, to see a copy of the original survey and bout the only difference that you can notice between that one and the one that Abe Lincoln surveyed of the present town, is that the centers, the main street, the two main streets, one from the north and south and the one east and west, intersected at the public square. They came up not on the sides of the square but in the center or in the middles of the sides of the sides of the square. Lincoln threw the square in there between streets. There is on file in the Circuit Clerk’s office a copy of the Lincoln Plat of Petersburg and it was recorded on February 22, 1836. It began to grow. Somehow or other it took on new life. These other towns began to pass out of the picture As New Salem began to die, Petersburg, began to grow.

In 1841 the legislature passed and act making a town out of Petersburg. Then the COUNTY OF MENARD was laid out in 1839 and the courthouse was located here and then the town began to grow. At the time it was made the County seat it had a population of 300."

Recipe
One of my resolutions is to become a quasi-flexitarian.....that means lots more veggies and a lot less meat.  But I still will eat meat because I really don't like tofu!  And a vegan I'm not!

I will be starting this flexitarian regimen after tonight's meal of dry rubbed and smoked pork ribs cause they are a favorite of mine.....might as well go down with a belly full of good food before the flex stuff starts.  But for the most part I will be using some vegetarian recipes and in some I will add very lean meat or chicken or fish.....but small amounts of the meat product.

But come tomorrow I will be making veggie pasta.....simple to make....chop carrots, celery, onions, squash and toss in parsley, olive oil and pepper (and salt if you like) with lots of herbs for flavor.  Spread in a pan and roast at 425 until they are golden brown....toss with your choice of pasta and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Thought For The Day
None of us is as smart as all of us.
--Phil Condit

I sure don't mind having a good beer every once in a while.  When someone tells me I should try a certain drink or a certain beer I will try it just to see if it's the one I've been waiting for all of my life.

But.....sometimes there are those "try it" drinks which should be flushed down the toilet or buried in the ground because they aren't fit for human consumption.....that has happened to me!

Someone told me I should try a wonderful beer called Mephistopheles Metamorphosis Beer ..... when I heard that name I thought to myself....I bet the devil is in that beer since old Mephistopheles himself, in legend, worked for the devil and is the one Faust sold his soul to.

But being the good joe that I am, I went ahead and tried it. I looked at the nice head on it...I was kind of surprised at this...then I thought maybe it will be like Hornsby's Hard Cider which I love.   I smelled the Mephistopheles first....oranges, bananas, apples, bread, flowers, yeast, sugar, candy.

The first taste was weird....I tasted a citrus....then a peppery taste....then tartness....then kind of like an apple taste....then spicy...then like bread (the yeast probably)....then yeast.  I tasted again and I thought of a strong golden ale which I usually can't stand.

I really can't say that I liked it...and I know that I had a headache the next day but I don't think I will try it again...I'll have Hornsby's Hard Cider thank you and will leave the devil alone!!

I think I will use the other bathroom!  Good thing I didn't see this the other night when trying that devil beer!!

Excuse Me There Is A Hair In My Soup

A Hair In Soup Adds Body???

I don't mind vegetables or mushrooms or meat in my soup, but a hair in my soup just about makes me come unglued.

Not long ago I ordered a nice bowl of "all you can eat" cream of potato soup because it was a cold day and the thought of a yummy hot soup on a cold day brought a glow to my body.  When the soup arrived, it was nice and creamy and the first bite was delightful.  Another few bites proved that the chef knew how to make a good potato soup.

I placed my spoon in the midst of the chunky potatoes and then I saw something which wasn't white and creamy....it was black and ummm..... oh my God it was course and curly.  Kerplunk went the spoon.....napkin came up and covered my mouth in case the other spoonsful made their way back up from the belly.  Could it be???  Was this a pubic hair????  I look around, and see no one with short curly hair.  I sit there a moment trying to get my rebelling tummy to quit fighting with my guts......don't you dare make me barf tummy.

I'm still looking around when I see the kitchen door open and see a cook in the back with long brown hair.  So no short curly hair back in the kitchen.....it must be someone's lost hair from a spot I don't even want to think about.  I try to get my speaking ability.....still trying to keep from losing it all.  Finally I am able to signal the waitress....which incidentally has blonde hair as do several of the waitresses.  The waitress comes over and asks if I am alright in a pleasant voice.  I proceed to tell her that I have found someone's lost property in my soup.

She's really not listening I can tell...she is more concerned with the patrons who have just yelled at her from across the room......her response  to me is "that's nice".  I sit back astounded at what I have just heard.  It practically wounded me to hear that.....I respond in a a matter of seconds "What do you mean that's nice....are you people serving "Soup of Hair" so no one will ask for a second helping?"  Then it must have hit her .... she was beginning to understand that I really had a problem and turned on the Miss Nice voice. "I am so sorry Ma'am....let me get you another bowl with no hair. "  What?????????????  Do you think I want another bowl of the same soup....no way.  Just bring me the check...and she did.  And the worst thing was I had to pay for that bowl of hairy soup.  I just got the heck out of there before my stomach really rebelled.

Abraham Lincoln - The Grocery Clerk
It is always nice to learn more about our esteemed former county resident and 16th president, Mr. Abraham Lincoln.  The following is taken from the book  "Early Pioneers and Pioneer Events of the State of Illinois" published in 1899.

The first time I ever saw or heard of Abraham Lincoln was in 1832.  I had stopped over night at Jack Armstrong's, who lived on a farm 5 miles northwest of New Salem.  I there saw a young man whom I had never met before, and asked him who he was, and he said his name was Abe Lincoln, and that he was working for his father.  He was tall and slender, and was dressed in homemade jeans, about the same goods that the majority of young men were wearing at that time - about the same that I wore myself.  The next time I saw Lincoln, to become acquainted with him, was the log tavern at New Salem, kept by James Rutledge.  I was carrying the mail from Lewistown to Srpingfield, and put up with the Rutledge tavern where Mr. Lincoln was boarding.  He was at that time a clerk in the store of Samuel Hill a merchant of New Salem.  Mr. Lincoln had been to New Orleans on a flat boat load of produce, and Mr. Hill had sent by him 100 barrels of flour that was ground at the water mill at New Salem.  Mr. Lincoln sold the flour at a good price, and was so prompt paying the money, and gave such good satisfaction, that on return that Mr. Hill made him a clerk in his store.  Mr. Hill had the largest stock of goods in New Salem, and also kept the post office.  Mr. Lincoln I observed was very attentive to business, and was kind and obliging to the customers of the store, having pleasant things to say to them; and they had so much confidence in his honesty that they preferred to trade with him rather than Mr. Hill or the other clerks.  I noticed that this was particularly true with the women customers; they would often say they liked to trade with Mr. Lincoln, for they believed that he was honest and would tell the truth about the goods.

I went into the store one day to buy a pair of buckskin gloves and asked him if he had a pair that would fit me.  He threw a pair on the counter.  "There is a pair of dogskin gloves that I think will fit you, and you can have them for seventy five cents."  When he called them dogskin
"How do you know they are dog skin gloves?"  I believe he thought my question was a little impudent, and it rasped him somewhat that I had the audacity to question his word.  "Well sir", said he, "I will tell you how I know these are dogskin gloves.  Jack Clery's dog killed Tom Watkin's sheep, and Tom Watkin's boy killed the dog, and old John Mounts tanned the dogskin and Sally Spears made the gloves, and that is how I know they are dogskin gloves."   So I asked no more questions about the gloves, but paid the six bits and took them; and I can truly say that I have worn buckskin and dogskin gloves from time to time for sixty years since then, and have never found a pair that did me the service that those I got from Mr. Lincoln.

I have understood that Mr. Lincoln got $20 a month for clerking in Mr. Hill's store, which was considered good wages at that time although he had to pay $2 a week for his board.

While Mr. Lincoln was clerking in the store for $20 a month, Mr. Hill gave him the privilege of going out to work in the time of harvest, where he could earn $1 to $1.25 a day and his board; and when the harvest was over he would take him back in the store again.

At another time I will post more from this book so that we can all learn more about Abraham Lincoln.

That ATM card has sure had a work out these last weeks.  Every time I use it, it's like the lottery....you don't know if you will win or not.....but in my case, don't know if money will come out or stay in the bank...under someone else's name of course.

It's almost to the point, that when I go to the ATM and punch in my password, I get slower and slower punching in the numbers, because between numbers I am saying a prayer to the Lord, "please Lord let there be one more time of coming out the slot, you know Lord what I'm talking about...green stuff....about five inches long and a couple of inches wide....and I don't mean grass either Lord."   I punch in another number and then I'm ready to punch in the last number....my prayer is complete.  Now I wait for the rumbling of the stomach of the ATM machine.  Will it or will it not???? That is the question.

The money door slides open.....there is the green stuff.....I start yelling "I won I won".  Oops I must have thought I was at a casino.  Of course at the casino about the only machines that do pay are the ATM's.

Now that I have my ATM money, I wonder how many more times before that little card of plastic finally wears out....it can't be long I'm sure!!

The final days before Christmas are upon us.  As I think back through the year, I had one wish when I did a rebirth of this blog....it was to be able to keep posting through the year and especially at least reach a date around the holidays.  Even though at times I didn't know if I would be able to continue, I persevered and have almost reached my target of the Christmas holidays.  What a wonderful Christmas present to myself.  I sincerely hope that the coming holidays will bring you as much joy as I am experiencing this year.....to be here on earth and able to continue to post is a joy and a dream come true.  Thank you for having faith in me.

Does The Bogeyman Follow Santa

I Know There Is A Bogeyman!

I'm sure most of us grew up knowing about the bogeyman.  If you weren't good, you probably heard "the bogeyman will come and get you".  I think I might have heard that many many times over my life.....but I guess I must not have been too terribly bad as I'm still here.

But, at Christmas, I seemed to hear that "bogeyman will get you" more than the average child......I think my mom and later my oldest sister wanted to make sure I was a perfect kid (cough cough).  Maybe it was because they knew I wasn't so perfect due to the fact that one year I unwrapped a present.  It was a beautiful jacket and I decided that no one would know, so I wore it to school  ...... BUSTED....I didn't know my sister was coming home from work early!!!

As a kid I always wondered how the words "Santa knows you've been bad and he will not bring you anything" and the phrase "the bogeyman will get you if you're bad" fit together at Christmas time. It crossed my mind enough to worry a few years if  the bogeyman followed Santa on his Christmas Eve rounds to scoop up all of the bad kids.  On those childhood years, when I knew I'd  been bad (because I was told several times and even got butt swats in a couple of cases of mouth trouble), I covered up my head with the covers and laid awake almost all night wondering when the bogeyman was going to come through my bedroom door (which I locked) to get me.

But I'm still here so I guess the bogeyman must have forgotten to stop at our house.  Whew!

As an adult and a mother I can see why kids might worry at Christmas time......the bogeyman trick is intended to frighten kids into compliant behavior and so is the "Santa knows you've been bad and won't bring you anything".  There are some kids who now suffer from emotional problems....perhaps it's because of the bogeyman and Santa.  Maybe parents in general have told kids these phrases too many times. Think about it!!

But in my ripe old age of  ??  I still believe in Santa.....and the big bad bogeyman.  I still cover my head up when I've been bad although I have no one to tell me that the bogeyman is going to get me.....but I know when I've been bad he just might come and get me....and especially on Christmas Eve because I think the bogeyman follows Santa.

Recipe

A Christmas treat always welcomed at most homes is tasty fudge.  I love peanut butter fudge but, really don't care too much for the kind made with marshmallow creme and peanut butter chips.  The following recipe is a quick and easy recipe.

Peanut Butter Fudge
2 cps sugar
1/2 cup milk (I use evaporated)
1 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup chopped nuts

Put sugar and milk in a heavy pan and bring to a boil stirring constantly.  Boil 2 1/2 minutes...stir entire time.  Remove from heat and add peanut butter and vanilla.  Stir just until mixed well and quickly add nuts and briefly stir.  Pour into buttered 8 x 8 pan.  Cool before cutting.

Giddey Up ...let's go.  In the days of old, those  words were used to tell a horse to stop standing there....and hurry up let's go.  But, I wonder if that horse knew what those words meant??

Even the sleigh ride song has those words in it.

I think when people hear those words and that song, it catapults people into the holiday spirit....at least it does me.  I used to wanna get out in the snow (which we don't have on the ground) and hook up the old sleigh and get going....and then get back to the house all cold and with a red nose....and drink hot chocolate and eat cookies to warm up.  At least that was what we did in the days of old.

Those olden days were so much fun.  We didn't have a care in the world and looked forward to making our own fun.....singing Christmas carols with our friends and playing in the snow....and sitting on the sleigh and telling the make believe horses "Giddey Up..let's go".  Now I sit on my sofa with the television remote and watch television and think about how I'm going to get everything done for Christmas.

Well.....I guess I better giddey up off this sofa and "let's go" !!!  Later................if I can just get off this dang sofa!

One week from yesterday is the big day.

Come again and sit a spell.

Calling the Energizer Bunny

How Many People Will Forget Batteries???

Those poor little kids who wake up to nice gifts under the tree from Santa and all of them take batteries....3 triple AAA ..... 4 Double AA .. big batteries, little batteries.....but did the parents remember to buy them   NO NO NO.   Oh No!

On this day when kids usually play hard and long, the energizer battery bunny isn't even able to show its stuff during the Christmas morning hours.  Of course the house is quiet all morning because the kids are mad at Santa or the mom and dad because there aren't any batteries to make the fire siren do its shrill and screeching sound....no bells ringing .... no lights flashing on the remote cars.....and the remote cars are just at rest in the box.

The kids are nestled all snug in their beds.  Wait...... that was supposed to be on Christmas Eve not Christmas Day!   Seems like the kids got a bit mouthy with mom and dad over no batteries so they were sent to bed.  It sure gives mom and dad time to rest after staying up all night to put together all of those toys that don't make a peep.

Wake up mom and dad....get on your panties and get going and find a store  open on Christmas Day.  You are the one who forgot the dang things, so get moving.    With the greedy type of merchants these days, I'm sure there will be several open.  Get that last leftover Christmas shopping dollar Mr Merchant.  And, you say you mark up the price on batteries....not surprising because a lot of moms and dads forget these precious little commodities and ou Mr. Merchant can make a killing on those precious batteries.

But I've got news for you this year.....the Energizer Bunny was arrested, charged with battery.  Ho Ho Ho.  Better plan on toys with no batteries this year.

Greenview School History - Continued

This is copied from one of the original Greenview Scrapbooks.  This article is continued from yesterday's blog post.  I believe this particular article was written many years ago but not published until approximately 1975.

"......On May 1, 1948, by a vote of the people, Community District No. 200 was formed.

Three main purposes were confronted for this new unit, namely, (1) that the people of the Greenview Community high school district vote sufficient bonds for the erection of the new high school building; (2) that they establish the above mentioned community unit school district to serve all grades one through twelve; (3) that they include sufficient territory to insure a population of at least 2,000 and assessed evaluation naturally being well over the $6,000,000 mark.

On April 13, 1948, the people of the community voted a $300,000 bond issued for a new high school building.  Of the 572 votes cast at the election, 511 were FOR the proposition and only 61 AGAINST the measure.

High school administrators through the years include:  D. M. Harris, John Mayfield, John Berry, John Robinson, Mr. Penny, Mr. Adney, Mr. Williamson, Mr. Nye, Mr. Steidley, Mr. Brazier, Theodore U. Hanley, J. C. South.,H. C. Hobson, R. C. Hiett, A. W. Bailey, August Brandt, Asa Hiett, Miss Lillian Showalter (the only woman to hold this position *), J. P. Scheid, E. K Frost, R. C. Hiett, W. E. McBride, Paul J. Bigler, Hal O. Hall, Gerald R. Brown, Fred McNeal, Ira L. Kimmel, B. H. Moore, Donald Beatty, Wayne Dimmick, C. R. Thayer.

Only six school treasurers and their terms include:  William C. Smoot, 1865; E. D. Taylor, 1879; E. H. Brunsman, 1899; Karl H. Brunsman, 1918; Paul J. Palmquist, 1929; Miss G. Geraldine Godbey, 1951 and still serving in the capacity.

*in later years another woman, Mary Castro was employed as the superintendent.

Recipe

I think I posted this recipe around Christmas last year.  This is probably the most simple candy you can make.  And they are really good!

Ingredients:

Either lattice type pretzels or mini twists pretzels.
Rolo candies (buy as many as you want to make...one per pretzel
Pecans or walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Unwrap rolos.  Place pretzels on the cookie sheet and place a rolo in the middle.  Bake in the oven until the Rolo is just beginning to melt 3-5 minutes...should be soft but not melted.  Remove from the oven and immediately press a nut (can use half a nut) into the Rolo.  Cool and store in a container with a tight lid.

Quote For The Day
Let us be not be too particular, it is better to have old secondhand diamonds than none at all.

Friends are just the best thing.  Friends are the family we choose for ourselves....what a true statement.
At Christmas time the good in people seems to come out for some reason.  They are friendlier and more talkative and want to do things to help others.  I like that.
But I like to have my friends close to me so I can give them a friendly hug and good wishes for the upcoming holidays.    Friendship brings a warm feeling (kind of like peeing on oneself....everyone can see it but only you can feel the warm feeling it brings....just kidding....had to throw that in.  LOL)

So this holiday season, reach out and give a friend an extra special greeting.  It might boost your day.

Was Kindergarten My Best Subject

Are Kindergartners Smart??

These pre-first grade kids are so smart these days and I'm astounded!  They can read and write and tie their shoes and count and say the alphabet and a bunch of other things...... But I think I was just as smart back then, when we went to the so called kindergarten......which was simply the home economics class girls taking care of us for a few hours.  They got credit for the class, we got a snack and a nap and got to play in the sandbox. That's my story and I'm sticking to it because it's true.  But in my case, I hadn't been exposed to learning how to read and write and other things young kids know early in life in these days of progress.

Wait...I guess I wasn't so smart as I thought.....I think it was first grade, when I was in Miss Flo's class, before I could read.  And I couldn't tie my shoes until about 3rd grade....I had the hardest time with that.....and I still, to this day, tie my shoe laces opposite of everyone else.

I remember one time in my early school days the school  was having some kind of a meeting.  I took the paper home and my mom said she wasn't going to that....she said she would say she had a big bad headache.  Of course, the next day when the teacher asked if my mother was coming to the meeting, I told her that my mom said she was going to have a biggg baddd headache!  I got in trouble when I told my mom and dad at the dinner table what I told the teacher....well that's what my mom said!

You would have thought that little butt swat that I got would have taught me to keep my mouth shut, but no it didn't.  Because not so much later in my life there was going to be another meeting....my mom had said she was going to take a PTA bath so I related that too...she was coming because she was taking a PTA bath....but she wasn't going to any PTA meeting....it was a type of bath that women take (you know....those private areas that need an occasional washing).    I really got in trouble that time.  Geeze!

Just a bit past kindergarten age I did another loud mouth thing that I never forgot.....my mom used to smoke but she never wanted her old Aunt Rindy to find out.  So one night at the after dinner table while my folks were enjoying a smoke, the doorbell rang.  I ran to the door....and there was Aunt Rindy....so I hollered from the open front door in front of God and aunt Rindy......I hollered to mom  "MOM, put out your cigarette, Aunt Rindy is here."  It is a wonder I lived to see my 10th birthday as much trouble my mouth was always in.

I still think Kindergarten might have been my best subject in school....no worries, no trouble, no anything but play.  It was a good time in my life.

Greenview School History
This is copied from one of the orginal Greenview Scrapbooks.  This article will be the first of two or three articles on the schools in our town.  This particular article was written many years ago but not published until I think approximately 1975.

District #14, the first organized district at Greenview, was perfected in 1864.  At that time there were in operation three small schoolhouses in different places in "Blane's pasture".  These continued to operated under the new district plan until 1871.

At this time a two-story building was erected on the site of the old grade school building at a cost of $10,000.00.  In 1891 a new two-room building was erected on the same block and just west of the first brick structure.  The high school was moved to this new building.  From then on records show an organized four year high school curriculum being provided each year.

On March 8, 1915, the condition of the old buildings stimulated a resolution to condemn them, a favorable vote to issue $15,000 in bonds and the letting of contracts to build a new building.  The firm of Snyder and Montgomery were given the contract for erecting the present grade* brick building for $15,323, and Tripp Brothers were given the contract for heating facilities at $2,609.  In 1926 and 1927 the gymnasium and home economics buildings were erected.  The total cost to the taxpayers for the three buildings and equipment stands at $49,135.21.

Greenview, realising the acute necessity for increasing its district to obtain a more sound tax base for the education of their high school pupils, voted upon the proposition to establish a community high school district in 1936.  This proposition failed, due to the fact that not many citizens, as yet, had not realized the need and did not comprehend the increasing enrollments and costs of education.  On June 8, 1940, by a vote of 693 FOR, 129 AGAINST, the Greenview Community High School district was formed.  On May 1, 1948, by a vote of the people, Community District No. 200 was formed.

*  this relates to the grade school, which was the one which we all knew in our childhood. It was sold on December 13, 1974 to Roger Horn for $26,000.00.

Note the above picture is the first school building which was torn down in 1915.

Watch for a continued school related post tomorrow.

Carrot, Pineapple, Jello Salad

2 small packages of orange jello (can use sugar free if desired)
Grated carrots (until it looks like enough - maybe around 1 cup)
20oz can crushed pineapple

Mix the jello as on the package....cool for a while until it looks like it's beginning to gel.  Add grated carrots and very well drained pineapple (I squeeze mine to get out the juice).

Quote For The Day
The road to success is always under construction.
--unknown author

When you visit your doctor do you ever think he is not listening?  That happens to me a lot.  But I guess old doctor man is always busy and thinking about what ailment I'm gonna come up with next.

Your appointment is just one of many every 15 minutes appointments for a doctor.  With each, he has to change mind courses, from maybe a broken leg with one patient then on to another patient with a brain tumor.  So I guess the poor (ha ha ha) man has to have special considerations when he visits your little exam room.....give him a break.

The last time I was in my doctor's office I expected him at any moment to turn to me and say "no hablo inglis".  And, when he told me what I had, I think he was speaking in Russian because I didn't understand any of the diagnosis.

So this Christmas season, I'm going to be nice and not go to the doctor......I'll give him a break and me too.  But I have every intention of eating whatever I want because the last time I was in the doctor's office I crossed my fingers behind my back when I answered him after he said no more cookies and candies".
