Today is the first news post on our Greenview blog. I'm excited.

I've been scampering around trying to find things to post about... and, I have a few things. I find that I might have to go to a less rigorous posting schedule. Daily posts might be too much to hope for..... after all, Greenview is small and rather "dull", for lack of a better word. But I hope to post at least two or three times a week. If people want to chat back and forth, I am willing to publish a post each day for people to use as a chat blog. Let me know if you want this.

Greenview Marbold Assoc. Ice Cream Social

This past Sunday was the day to be on the grounds of the old Marbold Mansion to attend an old fashioned Ice Cream Social. The grounds really look nice lately, with the Marbold Mansion Association committee having work days to spiff up the grounds and the house. For those of you who have been gone a long time, the current owner lives in another state, but a few years ago he spent mucho dollars to start renovations. We all remember the run-down condition of the mansion, and I'm sure the money spent thus far is only a drop in the bucket. Some of my friends admitted that they made visits to see the haunted mansion during our teen years (probably at night). For me it was the normal though as my dad farmed that land for years, so I was in and out of the mansion when it was still in half-way decent shape. Memberships in the Marbold Mansion Assoc. are available for a small yearly fee.

The approximate number attending the ice cream social was 300. The trolley from Petersburg ran from Greenview to the mansion, and the heresay numbers were either 106 or 107 persons rode the trolley. These numbers are impressive.

Labor Day Celebration A Success.

Word has it, the Labor Day Celebration was a total success. If you were downtown on Labor Day, you would have seen a petting zoo, pies being auctioned, a flea market, a Trolley running the streets, a huge parade with tractors, politicians, trucks, and old cars.

Speaking of cars, the downtown area was occupied with a record number of wonderful classic cars, registered for the ever popular Show and Shine car show. The announcement indicated 168 cars were registered, even though someone off the record said the number was actually 178 cars registered. No matter what the number, Greenview's car show has gained notoriety. Car owners say they like the show because of the money given away. I can't attest to the accuracy of a $1,000 donation by Greenview for prizes, but someone told me that was the gospel truth. Some drawings from the registered owners names netted $50 while other drawings netted $100. No wonder the car owners like our show.....not many car shows can boast they give away those kind of dollars to registered owners.

A 50/50 drawing resulted in $330 for a lucky Mason City area resident.

Arlee Theater - Mason City

For those of you who have moved, the Arlee Theater in Mason City still operates and shows movies. This theater is really a blast from the past for some of us Greenviewanites. I remember going to the theater when it cost $.50 and then it raised to $.75 ...... I remember going to the Petersburg theater more often than Mason City. Even though I have to reach to the furthest corners of my memory, I can remember the Linda Theater in Greenview where I saw Old Yeller and Peter Pan in the late 50's. That was a few years ago and I was a mere baby. LOL. I can also remember seeing movies in the park, shown on a huge screen affixed to the park wooden bandstand (long ago removed from the park).

For those of you who still live in the area, the Mason City theater is closed during September except for a couple of special showings, but plans to reopen in October. During Prairie Harvest Days and specifically on September 19, there will be a live performance of "Noteworthy" and they will have a fundraiser for the Mason County Arts Council on September 29, showing the classic "Showboat".

Recipe From An Old Menard County Cookbook

Tomato Preserves

10 cups sugar
2 cups water
Cook until this threads. Add 7 cups coarsely chopped tomatoes and 1 small can crushed pineapple. Cook until jellied and pour into jars. Approx. 5 cups.

Rainfall Amounts Differ

The Sangamon-Menard Extension keeps track of rainfall amounts from local area farmers who regularly check their gauges. For Greenview, these gauges are located north of town on the western part of North Middletown blacktop, south of town on the road by the FS Plant, east of town on the eastern part of North Middletown blacktop and west of town (couldn't identify where exactly). The four month totals for April, May, June and July vary a bit, but the amounts are rather hefty.

Totals in Inches:

North - 23.50

South - 18.75

East - 22.45

West - 20.90

I remember one rainfall a few years ago, I was on the back deck where it was raining and my husband was on the front porch where it wasn't raining. It goes to show you that different areas can vary immensely.

Soda Fountain in Petersburg

Word has it that there is a place in Petersburg on the square where you can get a real old fashioned Chocolate Phosphate. Details please if anyone knows which place has these!

Greenview Deaths Recently

1. Susan Adams - She was Susan Rankin prior to her marriage to Jim Adams. She was the daughter of Harold and Carolyn (Mosely) Rankin. Susan had a long battle with ALS.


2. Billy Moore - Former resident living in Texas. He was the son of Frances and Keith Moore.

3. Betty Faye Dennis White - Former resident and high school graduate. She was the daughter of Gladys and Floyd Dennis. Betty Faye had a long battle with Cancer.
