The Corn Is Getting Picked

Dust is flying....noise level has increased.
The corn must be ready.....farmer's are in the fields.  The dust is so thick in the air and I'm sneezing.  Even though I've seen a lot of green on the corn stocks, the farmers who are picking their corn must have their own dryers or at least willing to take a dock for moisture.

Yesterday a farmer's wife from Mason City had an accident in their grain truck (The Marshall's).  As she was driving, the brakes failed and she went into a very deep ditch.  The truck overturned and was completely demolished.  She was hurt but was released from the hospital.  I hate to hear about these fall harvest accidents, but they seem to happen.....and many times it involved the wife of a farmer or a child who is driving the truck.  I remember last year another Mason City farmer's daughter was in an accident in which the truck over turned while loaded (The Schnorr's).

To any farmer or farmer's wife who might be reading this or if you know someone who is in the fields, make sure the utmost care is taken to prevent a field accident.  Our prayers are with the local Greenview area farmers for a safe and prosperous harvest.

From the Greenview Scrapbook

1937 - Louise Calloway now Lockart, opened a beauty shop in one of Paul Palmquist's buildings on Main Street.  A number of our Greenview girls previously opened beauty shops in Greenview and kept our hair curled:  Mardell Barnett, Helen Barnett, Mildred McClintick, Carol Cheaney, Ruth Simmering, Wardell Ennis Woodrum, and Margaret Lemme....later others opened shops: Addie Pisoni, Luella Trumbo and Betty Biggs.

Dr. Hill took over Dr. Orr's practice.  The Masonic Lodge purchased the Wernsing Store Building for $4000.  The Menard-Cass Home Bureau was organized March 19.  J.B. Taylor opened a garage in the Tresseler Building.  Melvin Gard operated a grocery store and meat market belonging to Claude Hatch.

1938 - W.F. Allison & Sons of Mason City erected a new elevator on the site of the one which had burned. Jim McAtee was in charge as the manager.  Albert Pisoni bought the Corner Cafe and also Gard's bowling alley.

1939 - In May, a Squadron, Sons of the Legion was organized.  Henry Bradley while hunting down on Salt Creek, shot a huge bird thought to be a hawk, but it was a golden eagle, with a wing span of 7 foot and weighed 17 lbs.  A Girl Scout troop was organized.  Bud Barnett bought Jess Barnett's grocery business.  A WPA library was opened in October.

1940 - Jan. 29 and 30 a severe blizzard wrecked the telephone and light lines and service was interrupted for several hours.  Dick Cheney was in the restaurant business, operating the Corner Cafe.    The Community School proposition was voted on and the New District No. 200 was formed.  John Estill bought the filling station and electrical shop.  Selective Service was authorized by the U. S. Government.  The first polio drive was conducted in 1940.

1941 - Menard County Rural Chorus was organized.  Mr. & Mrs. Guy Austin purchased the restaurant from Nina Allen.  The old Swedish Church was dismantled.  Purin Pittman opened a shoe repair shop.  Clinton Lance purchased Cheney's Cafe.  December 7, 1941, America is again at war.  The japs bombed Pearl Harbor.  Lifeless bodies of 2300 Navy and Army men along with 1200 wounded this in less than two hours.  It was a dark week and Americans coined the slogan "Remember Pearl Harbor".

A Couple of Interesting Pictures of Old

For anyone who remembers the A & P store in Springfield,  I couldn't find a picture of it, but I found a 1931 picture of the first A & P store in Holyoke, MA.  I thought it was a cool picture.

I also found an old picture of one of the first Kroger stores which was started in 1876.  I love Kroger and go to both Lincoln and East Peoria (if I'm already in town that is) to shop there occasionally.

Recipe

This recipe is rather an odd one, but it's really good.....kind of like bananas foster.  It's a casserole that can be used as a dessert.  Most people have never heard of this type of casserole.  It's an oldie but goodie!!

Banana Casserole (Like Bananas Foster)

Heat oven to 325 degrees F.  Heavily butter a shallow casserole dish .  Cover bottom with a layer of bananas sliced in half then lengthwise. Sprinkle with brown sugar and plenty of butter then sprinkle with raisins and pecans.  Repeat as many layers as you wish, ending with pecans on top.  Bake 30 to 40 minutes.  Just before serving, pour a little brandy over the top (optional of course).

Thought For The Day

I'm an idealist.  I don't where I'm
going, but I'm on my way.

--Carl Sandburg

I think at one time I included some entendres in a post.  An entendres is something every writer has to be aware of.  It's a statement that has a double meaning.....sometimes very funny.  Here's some examples:

1.  The women who run the local apparel consignment store are discarding their clothes.  They welcome you to come and see them.

2.  If you don't go to someone's funeral, they won't come to yours.

3.  Slow Children Crossing.

4.  I was thrown out of the car.  I was found by some stray cows.

It's well known that many entendres can be interpreted to mean something a bit risque.....a trait of entendres.  The writer must always be on their toes (I just said another entendre).

A writer must also always be aware of spelling errors and especially in the business world.  I'll tell you one of the classic letters which went out at the insurance company I once worked at (not my letter).  A gentleman had his testicles removed.  The claims person sent him a letter requesting his bills, however the letter went out with a spelling error....yep....the letter requested his balls instead of bills.  The poor man was so upset when he called in....he calmly told the claims examiner he didn't have his balls as they had been discarded during the surgery.  The claims examiner had not yet discovered the spelling error and had to try to explain why they didn't need his testicles (balls).  It was certainly a humorous moment at our company....we all laughed for days.

If you ever see something I've said or misspelled, just laugh it off.....sometimes it's inevitable and I don't catch everything......but I know a good laugh is good for us all.
