Freaky Friday Is Here My Friends 10-30-09

Will you walk into my parlor

Said the spider to the fly;

Tis the prettiest little parlor that you ever did spy.

The way into my parlor is up a winding stair,

And I have many curious things to show you

When, you are there.

"Oh no no" said the little fly,

"to ask me is in vain"

For who goes up your winding stair

can never come down again.

Tis The Day Before Halloween...Freaky Friday

Today may be the best day to learn all about Halloween and why we have this special occasion. Halloween has ties to the Celtic celebration called Samhain (pronounced as "sah win". This festival is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture.

Ancient Gaels believed that there was an overlapping between the dead and the living and the dead would come back on October 31. There were always bonfires which attracted insects and bats. Masks and costumes were worn to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. In Ohio, Massachusetts and Iowa, Halloween is known as "beggars night". Halloween history appears to show that trick or treating was not actively practiced in America until the 1930's although it was practiced by the Irish, British, Scot-Irish many generations earlier.

~~The Greenview Christian Church will sponsor a Halloween Maze, from 6 to 8:30 pm. Games, pictures and refreshments available. Parents are welcome.

~~The First Baptist Church of Greenview will be handing out treat bags and serving hot cocoa for trick-or-treaters as well as parents at the pastor's house during the community trick-or-treat hours. Bonfire, hot dogs and marshmallows too if nice weather. Near the Intersection of Engle and Douglas, 235 S, Engle.

~~Greenview Trick-or-Treat adventures are only permitted in the community on October 31, from 5pm to 8pm. If you wish to received trick or treaters, leave your porch light on.
