Trivia Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Tuesdays Are Bland Days.
Tuesdays always seem to me to be bland days. The day isn't far enough into the week to get excited about the weekend. The housework still seems to be in order from the weekend, and I've already watched all of the movies I've rented for the weekend even though I don't need to return those movies until Wednesday.

Should I read a book? Should I wash windows? Should I just sit and watch soap opera shows all day? Or, should I just laze around and do absolutely nothing. That sounds good, but boring. So I have decided that Tuesdays shall be Trivia Tuesdays from now on. We should all learn something at least once a week to keep our minds functioning properly. When we use brain power, supposedly it keeps alzheimer's from settling in. So let's use the old noggins a lot! Trivia may sometimes be useless, but at least we are learning something new. Since we have lots of readers who have either been away from Greenview for a while, or the readers are fairly new to Greenview, our trivia won't center on Greenview, but will be general topics trivia as well as brain teasers.

Trivia Tuesday Questions .... the answers will be at the bottom!! Don't look until you try to answer the trivia question!!

1. Who was America's first flapper icon?
2. What ficticious family from television and the movies had the address of
"000 Cemetary Lane, Cememtary Ridge"?
3. Is a #1 pencil lead softer or harder than a #2 pencil lead?
4. Common sugar comes from what two plants?
5. What city lies half-way between Miami, Florida and Cuba?
6. Can you name 4 US capitol cities which are named after former Presidents?

Recipe From An Old Menard County Cookbook
Christmas is coming so it's time to plan what candies you want to try to make for your Holiday Platters. Here's a caramel candy recipe from an old county cookbook.
Caramels
2 cups sugar
2 cups white corn syrup
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 cups cream or evaporated milk
1 tsp vanilla
Boil sugar, corn syrup and salt to soft ball stage, stirring occasionally; add butter. Then, gradually add cream so that mixtures does not stop boiling. Stir constantly and cook to firm ball stage. The mixture is very thick and sticks easily. Add vanilla and pour into buttered dish. When cool, cut into 1 inch squares and wrap in wax paper. Keep in cool place. (Add 1/2 cup chopped nuts if desired at the time vanilla is added).
Note from me: When making candy, always make sure to use a heavy pan which is large enough to prevent the candy from boiling over. This will help prevent burns of your skin and will help prevent the candy from burning.
